In response to concerns by EU Member States, non-EU countries, traders and operators that they will not be able to fully comply with the rules if they are applied from the end of 2024, the Commission has proposed to postpone the applicability date of the deforestation regulation by one year.
In a trilogue between the European Council, the Commission and the European Parliament, agreement was reached to postpone the application of Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 (EUDR) against deforestation for 12 months, without changes to the content of the Regulation.
The Regulation will be applicable from 30 December 2025. For micro or small enterprises, the applicability of the Regulation is also postponed to 30 June 2026.
This step still needs to be formally approved by the European Parliament and the Council, which should take place in the next two weeks or so. The postponement must also be published in the Official Journal of the EU.
